Third Place Essay

Which is more important: friendship or money?
(Time limit: 1 hour)

Money is undoubtedly and undeniably more important than friendship. Indeed, friendship is important if you hunger for companionship. However, if you have no money, you will hunger, literally.

Like a philosopher once said, friendships made in the days of your youth will fade. Most of the time, that is exactly what happens. In fact, friendships cause more trouble than one would expect. Countless lives have been negatively affected and destroyed due to unhealthy friendships. Youths who are not wise make friends with smokers, drug dealers and the like, ending their carefree lives before it has even started. It is devastating what such friendships do to the families of the involved.

On the other hand, money is a wonderful thing! Money cannot make you sad, money cannot quarrel with you and money cannot dictate how you run your life. Money is a tool that helps to open many doors and it creates opportunities. Imagine how perfect the world would be if there were no poor people. The only thing they lack is, yes, money. With money, you can practically do anything and everything. Family vacations would be an everyday thing and every meal would be a buffet.

The best part about having an unlimited supply of money is that you get to taste the most scrumptious food from all around the world! Everybody would be happy to have steak on the dinner menu and a soufflĂ© for dessert. Money pleases everyone, that’s for sure. People, however, do not.

Humans will always make mistakes. Humans can never delight or give joy to each other unceasingly. There will always be conflict or a difference in opinion with friends. Almost without fail, when a friend is away, he or she gets forgotten by other friends. To them, out of sight means out of mind. People grow bitter and heartbroken because of broken friendships, especially when the break up is caused by a petty reason. The cold war between ex-friends will never end. It would have been better if they were never friends in the first place. They would have spared each other the heartache.

Friendships might end, but money still talks. Many people are motivated by money. It is the ‘green inspiration’ that makes the world go round. Everyone is a sucker for money. Show them the dollar (or ringgit) bill and work will get done. Furthermore, we need money to survive. Meeting basic needs takes a load of cash.

Money always wins. Whether or not you believe it does not make it any less true. Money has always been and will always be more important than friendship.
